Holding Hands

My first girlfriend happened along when I was thirteen.
She was attractive, humorous and intelligent.
I don’t recall how it happened.
It was a long time ago.

We held hands, shared jokes and knowing looks.
This was all new to me.
I was just going with the flow and not trying.
It seemed to work.

The one day at the local show
She said that she didn’t want to go out with me anymore.
Initially stunned I went home and laid on my bed
Wondering what I had done wrong.

Monday at school it was as if ‘we’ hadn’t happened.
I was upset for weeks
But she taught me a valuable lesson.
‘Life goes on.’

I am forty eight years old now
And still think of her often and fondly. I wish her well.
I wonder if she does the same about me.
What difference would it make anyhow?
